About the Nigerian Police Force

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) originated in Lagos in 1861 with a small 30-man Consular Guard, later growing and evolving into a structured force. Initially known as the “Hausa Police,” it underwent several transformations in the late 19th century, including the formation of the Lagos Police Force in 1896 and the Niger Coast Constabulary in 1894. Both of these forces operated with a focus on both civil and military functions. By 1930, the colonial government merged the Northern and Southern Regional Police into a national entity, laying the foundation for today’s NPF.

Following Nigeria’s independence, the NPF became the country’s primary law enforcement agency, with its powers and structure codified under Sections 214 to 216 of the 1999 Constitution. The Police Act defines its main duties: crime prevention, offender apprehension, public order maintenance, and law enforcement.

Operational control rests with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), appointed by the President. The NPF is organized into seven departments and divided into 17 zones, each headed by an Assistant Inspector-General. Each of the 36 states, along with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has its own command structure with divisions and outposts to ensure efficient policing.

Internationally, the NPF is recognized for its participation in peacekeeping missions, while domestically, it is tasked with maintaining internal security and upholding law and order.
