Number of questions in JAMB and how scores are calculated
JAMB, or the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, is an organization in Nigeria responsible for conducting the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which is the entrance examination for tertiary institutions in the country.
The number of questions in JAMB varies from year to year, but typically there are 180 questions in the UTME. These questions cover four subjects: English Language (which is mandatory for all candidates), and three other subjects relevant to the candidate’s intended course of study.
JAMB uses a computerized grading system to calculate the scores of candidates who take the UTME. The scores are based on the number of questions a candidate answers correctly. Each question is assigned one mark, and there is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
The raw score (i.e., the number of questions answered correctly) is converted to a scaled score, which ranges from 0 to 400. The scaled score is what is used to determine a candidate’s overall performance in the examination.
JAMB also uses a statistical method called equating to ensure that scores from different test administrations are comparable. This means that candidates who take the test on different days or in different sessions will receive scores that are equivalent in terms of difficulty.
It’s important to note that JAMB is just one of the factors that tertiary institutions in Nigeria consider when making admissions decisions. Other factors, such as a candidate’s O-level grades and their performance in post-UTME screenings, may also be taken into account.
