Sample On-site Test

Fresh water accounts for 2.5% of all water on earth. Of this freshwater, 0.3%
exists as surface water. Of this fresh surface water, 87% is found in lakes,
11% in swamps and 2% in rivers. If the total volume of water on earth is
1.386 billion km³, what is the total volume of water found in lakes?
(A) 80,3738 km³
(B) 85,8383 km³
(C) 90,4365 km³
(D) 95,3731 km³
(E) 100,291 km³

Answer/Workings
Step 1 – Calculate the total volume of fresh water by identifying 2.5% of the total volume of
water.
1.386 x 0.025 = 0.03465 billion km³ = 34.65 million km³
Step 2 – Calculate the total volume of fresh water which exists as liquid ground water by
identifying 0.3% of the total volume of fresh water.
34.65 x 0.003 = 0.10395 million km³ = 103.95 thousand km³
Step 3 – Calculate the total volume of water which is found in lakes by identifying 87% of the
total volume of liquid groundwater.
103.95 x 0.87 = 90.4365 thousand km³ = 90,4365 km³
Thus the correct answer is (C) 90,4365 km³
