The mountain summits of K2, Kanchenjunga, Lhostse, Macula and Cho Oyu have respective heights of 8,611m, 8586m, 8,516m, 8,486m and 8,188m. The line parent to these mountains is Mount Everest, which is 4.324% taller than the mean heights of these 5 mountains. What is the height of mount Everest?

Verbal Reasoning

Question 1

The traditional view, that gaining a degree will provide long-term employment security, has been questioned. The traditional story goes that to get ahead in society, one must spend three to four years and, in most cases, accumulate debt along the way. To leave school with no further education is to gain an unsatisfying career with little potential.

However, it can be questioned whether this pattern provides a valid representation of contemporary society. With the rise of tuition fees, the average student debt is at an all-time high. In addition, there is even greater competition for graduate jobs.

The Chronicle of Higher Education notes that between 2007 and 2009 the number of students going to university increased by 20% in the USA, 60% in Europe and almost 200% in Asia. With these increases in competition, it is little wonder that the traditional path is being questioned.

Based on the passage, which statement is not true?

Instruction

Select the correct response alternative.

Answer

A. The traditional university educational path is being questioned.

B. The average student debt is at an all-time high.

C. There has been a decrease in the number of people going to university

D. There has been an increase in the number of people going to university.

Solution:

The passage stated all the facts mentioned in the options except the fact that there has been a decrease in the number of people going to the university. Hence, option C is not true according to the passage.

Answer: C

Question 2

Statistics suggest that the city of London is the number one work destination in the United Kingdom. As one of the most popular cities in the world, London is renowned for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, fast-pace environment and non-stop social scene.

As a result of this, London attracts many recent graduates and young-workers. In addition to this, London boasts strengths in areas such as law, commerce, arts and politics. It is the legal capital of England, the home of English politics and proudly welcomes a diverse population. The second most-popular work destination in the UK is Manchester, closely followed by Birmingham. Both of these cities boast continually rising rates of employment.

Based on the information in the passage alone, which one of the following statements is false?

Instruction

Select the correct response alternative.

Answer

A. London is the legal capital of the UK.

B. Birmingham is the third most popular work destination in the UK.

C. London boasts continually rising rates of employment.

D. London is one of the most popular destinations in the UK for young workers.

Solution:

All the statements in the options were stated in the passage except the fact that London boasts continually rising rates of employment. According to the last sentence of the passage as shown: “Both of these cities boast continually rising rates of employment.” cities mentioned here are Manchester and Birmingham, London isn’t included.

Answer: C
